Diary of an Airbnb Dweller: COVID-19 – The devil’s alternative

When we were all making our New Year resolutions (seems like ages ago now), no one could’ve quite predicted the current Apocalyptic scenario where Normalcy for most on Planet Earth has been in permanent tailspin for the last couple of weeks. Not even one of our numerous prophets foresaw this:
“On December 31, 2019, the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) China office heard the first reports of a previously-unknown virus behind a number of pneumonia cases in Wuhan, a city in Eastern China with a population of over 11 million.

What started as an epidemic mainly limited to China has now become a truly global pandemic”

The COVID-19 Pandemic has seriously exposed the inadequacy of Healthcare systems in the so called Developed nations.
They were all caught flatfooted.
None of the US, UK or Italy and many others has enough Emergency Care Units and Respiratory machines to cope with the Corona Virus complications in patients.
Italy, the worst hit has not been able to keep up with the outbreak. The dead bodies are piling up and the elderly have more or less been told that they’re not priority. Doctors are having to play God in deciding who to treat.

Costs for Respiratory Machines (Ventilators) can range from $5000 to $50000.
In the UK Formula 1 companies have offered to step in and readapt their manufacriring processes to produce more ventilators for the NHS to meet the shortfall within a reasonable time frame.

Which takes me to my Motherland. How are we infrastructure-wise in the event of the worst case scenario?
How many designated quarantine centres do we have per State?
How many states have hospitals that are even remotely fit for purpose?
How are they going to prioritise who to treat first?
How will the government compensate workers if they’re forced to stay off work like in many other countries?

All this in a country where getting proper medical attention under normal circumstances is a pipe dream for the common man living on Minimum wage never mind during a pandemic.

The irony of it all is that unlike before when our Politicians can just escape to the West for treatment, this time that’s not an option. There is nowhere to go as most of their usual Health Tourism destinations are under Lockdown.
We are in this one together.
Perhaps this might be the hitherto missing PRECURSOR for them to realise that it pays to develop local infrastructure! .
A lot of them are within the high risk categories.
If they ever had to require ICU treatment right now, none of their Squillions salted away in foreign banks can help them as those countries have all shut their borders to “Aliens”.

Not even our Dear Leader PMB can hop on Airforce One and fly to London for his usual checkups. He will have to test the robustness of that infamous Aso Rock Clinic where so much gets budgeted each year.

If I was a betting man I wouldn’t give most of them much chances of making it in such a scenario.

Of course I pray that it never comes to this and the Pandemic gets nipped in the bud before wreaking any further havoc but as things look now, it appears that we are all in this for the long haul.

Will things change after this is all over?
Your guess is as good as mine! We can only live in hope!
