The three- member gang which shot and robbed a motorist of unspecified sums of money in Amukoko area of Lagos on Thursday are now in the Police net, according to an official.
Pandemonium broke out at about 9.00 a.m. on Thursday at Amukoko on the Orile- Mile 2 Expressway when the gunmen attacked the motorist.
An eyewitness told NAN that the gunmen, operating on six motorcycles, blocked the victim’s Toyota Sienna spacewagon at the Lafia Bus Stop axis of the expressway, and dispossessed him of his money after shooting him on the leg.
Many motorists abandoned their vehicles and scampered for safety just as passersby equally took to their heels as the gunmen shot sporadically before escaping on motorcycles into Amukoko area, the eyewitness said.
Confirming the arrest of the suspects, SP Dolapo Badmos, the police spokesperson in Lagos State, told NAN on Friday that they were apprehended by policemen attached to a bank while trying to escape through Ajegunle.
Badmos said the gunmen were spotted by the policemen, who gave them a hot chase while they opened fire on the police.
“During a cross-firing, one of them was shot on the leg, a stray bullet from the robbers also hit a roadside mechanic and three of the robbers were later arrested.
“Arms and ammunition were recovered from them as well as a motorcycle.
“The case has been transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) for further investigation,” the spokesperson said.
In another development, a 17-year-old girl, who allegedly attempted to steal a child, was also arrested on Thursday.
Badmos said the girl was apprehended by residents of Oto-Awori Community in Ijanikin area, who took her to the traditional ruler of the area.
“The Onijanikin of Ijanikin then called the police patrol team which picked her up.
“The case is still being investigated,’’ Badmos said.
