An armed robbery suspect was in the early hour of Monday shot dead during a gun duel between his gang and the police at Ikenne town.
The Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi who made this known on Tuesday, said in the course of the crossfire, other gang members of the robbery syndicate escaped with gun shot injuries.
Oyeyemi said the encounter followed a distress call received by officers at the Ikenne divisional headquarters at about 5 00 am that a group of armed robbers had blocked Olabiro street in Ikenne and were dispossessing people of their valuables at gun point.
“Upon the distress call, the DPO Ikenne division, Noukauba Onuma quickly mobilised his patrol team and moved to the scene. On sighting the policemen, the hoodlums engaged them in gun battle which lasted for about 30 minutes at the end of which one of the hoodlums was shot dead while others escaped with various degree of gun shot injuries,”, Oyeyemi said
He said recovered from the dead robber was one cut to size locally made gun, one live cartridge and one expended cartridge.
Oyeyemi said the commissioner of police for Ogun State, Edward Ajogun has praised his men for their display of gallantry.
The commissioner also said this should be a warning signal to any would be criminal who are deluding themselves that police are not working to have a rethink, as the command will go to any length in protecting the good people of Ogun State.
He also directed that the fleeing members of the gang be hunted for and brought to justice within the shortest possible time.
