Three people have been reported killed on Thursday day during a predawn fight between rival cult groups operating in Ijebu – Igbo, headquarters of the Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State.
A witness, who spoke to newsmen, explained that while two of the dead were killed at Ojowo section of the town, one other identified simply as Owolabi, alias Aburo Obasanjo, was hacked to death at the lorries station of the town around 4am.
The witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the incident occurred 4:30am
The Police Command spokesman, Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the story but said only one person was killed and not three, saying ” just one person was found dead in a location within the town in the morning with machete cuts”.
The latest killings bring the number of persons killed in Ijebu -Igbo through cult – related violence to nine in the last five weeks.
In one of such killings which occurred in the first week of April, four persons, including a Police Inspector, were hacked to death in a clash between a cult group and people suspected to be members of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC).
Already, the Police have arraigned 34 people before an Ijebu – Igbo Magistrate court in connection with that clash.
The suspects are Dayo Ogunnaike, Demola Ogungbesan, Gbenga Odutayo, Sobanjo Damilola, Taofeek Ashiru, Abayoyomi Sarafa, Fatai Adaramola, Kehinde Agba, Ogun Saheed, Rotimi Emmanuel and 24 others.
The suspects were charged for conspiracy, murder, belonging to unlawful society, unlawful possession of arms among others. They were remanded in prison custody pending hearing of the case on the adjourned date of June 6, 2018.
