Planet TV launches in Nigeria

Youth lifestyle, music and entertainment channel, Planet TV, has launched in Nigeria. Co-owned by Nigeria’s Wale Akinlabi and South African Mabel Mabaso, the station was formerly known as Planet Radio Television (PRTV) until March 2015 when it rebranded into Planet TV.
Having broadcast most of its programmes from Johannesburg, South Africa since inception four years ago with only a satellite studio in Lagos, Planet TV now has a full studio in Lagos where it can broadcast a minimum of four hours live programming daily. It currently shows on GOTV channel 73.
Speaking at the launch of the studio last Friday, Mabaso described the station as young, vibrant, colourful and unapologetic African. She added that young as it is, Planet TV is already creating Pan-African content and that it is not in competition with anybody.
She said: “Planet TV eliminates borders in television, offering more general entertainment/lifestyle content from South, West Africa and the world at large. On Planet TV, it won’t be business as usual as viewers will be able to be part of the live programme by calling in, video calling via Skpe, interacting with their channel via Twitter, SMS and Facebook. Planet TV is the future of television and wants all Planetiers to own it by interacting live in real time both with their favourite presenters and celebrities while giving opinions on daily topics.”
The Channel Manager, Joshua Ewere, said Planet TV broadcasts live shows daily from Nigeria and that, “We give our audience the opportunity to be on air; there is an interaction between the channel and viewers. We preach reality content and we currently have programmes in English and Pidgin. Programmes in Nigeria’s local dialects are coming soon.”
