As the World celebrates World Oral Health Day, doctors in Ogun State have lamented the low level of awareness about mouth related diseases among the people.

The doctors said majority of the people always took their oral health for granted, hence it portends a real threat for their overrall well-being.

The doctors on Monday took to the major streets of Abeokuta to stage a walk on oral health awareness as part of activities marking the day. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Live Mouth Smart”.

Speaking after the walk, the Chairman of the Dental Committee of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Aliu Abu noted that the theme was geared toward empowering people to take control of their oral health.

He also urged Nigerians to safeguard their oral health through good oral hygiene habits, avoiding too much sugar intake, tobacco use, excessive alcohol intake and having regular dental check-up.

Abu also noted that the economic recession was also a factor affecting Nigerians attitude towards their oral health, saying majority doesn’t have the money to check their oral health status.

The Secretary of the Committee, Dr Oluseyi Adu, lamented that there was little statistics to help in providing solutions to the various oral health challenges of Nigerians.

He however noted that action has been intensified to remedy the situation by the ministry of health and the National assembly with the provision of a policy that would take oral health awareness to the grassroots.

The occasion also witnessed oral health talk and discussions, free dental check-up at the popular Panseke motor park.
